2008 TEAM INDIVIDUAL SCORING

The Dolphins started out the outdoor season in victorious fashion, winning the Mather invitational by 1/2 point over defending city champs Lane Tech.  Even more impressive were the six meet records set by the Dolphins.

Rachel Joravsky started the day setting the meet record in the 3200 Meter Run with a time of 11:51.  Later, teammate Devyn Thompson set the meet record in the 800, and beat Rachel in the 1600 to break that record as well.  Raena Rhone also set a meet record in the 400 and 200 meters.

In the Junior Varsity 4 x 400 M. Relay, the team of Morgan Hollie, Alicia Atchison, Jamika McCann, and Porsha Irvin also set a meet record, with a winning time of 4:45.6.

After a long week we are finally back on track (no pun intended) after the Illinois Prep Top Times Indoor Classic.  At the classic we had outstanding performances.  Raena Rhone finished 2nd in the 400, running a 57.41.  The distance medley relay of Maisie Vachuska, Jessica Wong, Chandler Farris, and Devyn Thompson placed 8th.  Devyn had run a personal best in the 800, running 2:24.07 to place 12th overall.  Elisabeth Forte finished 10th in the long jump, while her sister Victoria finished 9th in the triple jump.  In the 200 meters, Raena finished 11th, while Elisabeth finished 15th.

The Whitney Young Girls got in a good tune up for the Illinois Prep Top Times Indoor State Championships this past Saturday at Lewis University. 

Devyn Thompson Highlighted the Dolphin performances, as she ran an indoor personal best in the 800, 2:24.70, and received an at-large bid to compete in the 800 at the Illinois Prep Indoor Classic.  Devyn then followed up the 800 by winning the 1600 with a seasons best 5:26. 

Also in the 1600, Maisie Vachuska ran an all time personal best of 5:36, placing 8th. 

Raena Rhone placed 3rd in both the 400 and 200 meter races, running seasons bests in both. 

In the 3200, Addie Avila lead her heat throughout most of the race before fading to third equaling her seasons best of 14:09.  Sophomore Meagan Frenzer followed Addie to a personal best by over a minute, running 14:09 as well. 

In the 55 meters, Senior Leilah Langston made it to the finals, running 7.58. 

The field events saw a number of personal bests, including Doneri Mayhay in the Pole Vault (7'0"), Camille Hurley and Samantha Wong in the Long Jump (both at 15'6"), Joselyn Williams in the triple jump (27'-8"), and Precious Walker in the Shot Put (27'-8").

This past weekend at the Urbana Invite, the girls 4 x 200 qualified for the Illinois Prep Top Times meet.  The relay of Leilah Langston, Elisabeth Forte, Tiana Robinson, and Raena Rhone ran 1:48.60 to finish second in the meet. 
Leilah Langston highlighted the meet, finishing second in the 55 meter dash.  Leilah has shown much improvment throughout the season and is looking to having an excellent end of indoor and outdoor season.
Devyn Thompson finished 3rd in the 800 meters with an outstanding time of 2:26.  Devyn is just 2 seconds short of qualifying for the IPTT meet in the 800.
Elisabeth Forte finished 6th in the Long Jump.

The Dolphins combined this week to compete at the Proviso East Co-Ed Invitational.  Combined the Boy's & Girl's took second to Mather.  The girls won their division scoring 97.5 points to Proviso East's 95.  Additionally, the girls defeated Morgan Park for the first time in decades. 

Individually, Raena Rhone improved on her IPTT qualified 400 by running 58.53 while winning, and qualified for the 200 meters by running 26.68.  Fellow freshman Elisabeth Forte also qualified for the IPTT in the 200 by running 26.56. 

Devyn Thompson was the only other individual winner for Whitney Young, winning the 800 meters ahead of Lavinia Jurkiewicz.  Devyn also came back to place second in the 1600 meters.

Samantha Wong placed second in the 55 High Hurdles, running a seasons best time of 9.73. 

Bianca Gay placed 3rd in the High Jump with a seasons best jump of 4'6", and nearly cleared 4'8".  She later came back to place 3rd in the Triple Jump.

There were several other personal bests at the meet including Joyce Nimmocks in the Shot Put (6th Place), in the 200, and in the first 400 running 1:08 for the first time she ever ran that distance.

While the Girls Basketball Team was winning the state championship this past weekend, the track team split squads and went to Lewis and Hononegah.  After four days off, the Dolphins suffered in performance, as they failed to qualify anyone out of the Downers Grove Relays (the 4 x 800 relay had previously qualified, and once again matched the qualifiying time) and finished 5th at Hononegah. 
At the DGS meet, the 4 x 800 finished 9th, while the 4 x 200 relay and 4 x 400 relay ran seasons best times of 1:51.2 and 4:26.4 respectively.
Highlighting the Hononegah meet was the performances of Camille Hurley in the 55 and 400, Ivory Mills (3rd in the Pole Vault), and Joselyn Williams jumping a 2 foot personal best in the triple jump. 
There were several other personal bests at the Hononegah meet including Meagan Frenzer in the 1600, Beth Frenzer in the 800 and 1600, Jessica Wong in the 800,  Turiya Ingram in the 55 Hurdles, Amber Fredricks, Marissa Jenkins, and Jamika McCann in the 55 Dash, Audriana Higginbotham in the 400 and 200, and Addie Avila in the 1600.

The Whitney Young Dolphins won their second invitational in two weeks, as they won the Bloom Invitational, out scoring west suburban Glenbard South 96-90. 

Elisabeth Forte became the fourth qualifier for the Illinois Prep Top Times Indoor Classic in four meets for the Dolphins.  Elisabeth added over 1 foot to her long jump seasons best to jump 16'10 1/4" while winning the event.  Elisabeth also finished 2nd as part of the 4 x 440 yd. relay, 5th as part of the 4 x 220 yd. relay, and 6th in the triple jump. 

Raena Rhone also matched her IPTT qualifying time in the 440 yd. dash, winning in 60.4 over all-state runner Libby O'Brien of Glenbard South.  Last year, O'Brien placed 9th in the 400 Meter Dash at the state meet.  Raena also place 3rd in the 55 meter dash, and was part of the 2nd place 4 x 440 yd. relay.

The 4 x 880 yard relay of Lavinia Jurkiewicz, Rachel Joravsky, Jessica Wong, and Devyn Thompson also placed 1st, lapping every other team in the field twice. 

Lavinia came back to win the Mile Run in 5:48, while Maisie Vachuska placed 2nd in 5:54.  Devyn came back to win the 880 yd. run in 2:34, while Jessica Wong placed 7th in 2:53.

 Rachel Joravsky came back to place 2nd in the 2 Mile Run with a time of 12:37.  Ivory Mills also placed 2nd in the Pole Vault, once again clearing 7 feet.

The Junior Varsity Team placed 3rd behind Bloom and Argo. 

Jasmine Wright won the Hurdles for the second week in a row, running a seasons best time of 9.9. 

Tiana Robinson placed 2nd in the 55 Meter Dash, and followed with a 2nd place as part of the 4 x 220 yd. relay, and placed 4th in the Long Jump.

The 4 x 880 yd. relay of Tia McClellan, Beth Frenzer, Lucita Alford, and Porsha Irvin won, as three teams made a handoff too early and were disqualified.

Porsha came back later to win the 880 yd. dash with a time of 2:49. 

In the Shot Put, Joyce Nimmocks took second place with a personal best throw of 25'3".  She was also part of the 2nd place 4 x 220 relay.

Other members of the 4 x 220 relay were Jamese Dunlap and Jasmine Wright. 

The 4 x 440 yd. relay of Turiya Ingram, Alyscia Vincent, Jamika McCann, and Morgan Hollie placed second. 

Natalie Pace also placed 2nd in the Pole Vault with a height of 6'6".

The next meet for the Dolphins will take place March 3rd at Rockton Hononegah, while select varsity runners will attend the Downers Grove Relays in attempt to qualify for the IPTT indoor classic.

The Dolphins came up short against Homewood Flossmoor, losing to them 71.5 to 48.5.  Andrew scored 36 points to finish 3rd.  Despite this, there were several highlights at the meet. 
 
The 4 X 800 Meter relay became the third set of qualifiers for the Illinois Prep Top Times Indoor Classic.  The relay ran 9:46.9, and had splits of 2:26 (lavinia Jurkiewicz), 2:28 (Rachel Joravsky), 2:28 (Maisie Vachuska), and 2:25 (Devyn Thompson). 
 
Other winners for the Dolphins included Maisie Vachuska in the 1600 Meters, Raena Rhone on the 300 Meters, and Ivory Mills in the Pole Vault.
 
The Frosh Soph team lost a very close meet, with HF scoring 56, Andrew 48, and Young 46. 
 
Winners for the Dolphins were Perla Morales (3200 Meters), Tia McClellan (800 Meters), Kaya Cuper (1600 Meters), Tiana Robinson (300 Meters), and Hannah Watson (Pole Vault).

Varsity & Junior Varsity post victories at the Bloom Invitational

The Varsity Girls Track team posted their first Invitational victory of the 2008 season at the Bloom Invitational, defeating host Bloom 110-96.  The Junior Varsity followed suit winning the invitational over Simeon, 115-70. 

Highlighting the Varsity meet was the performance of Freshman Raena Rhone.  Raena won both the 55 Meter Dash (7.4) and the 440 yard dash (60.5), qualifying for the Illinois Prep Top Times Indoor Classic.  Raena will be joining teammate Victoria Forte, a qualifier from last week, who won the Triple Jump and placed 5th in the High Jump.  Elisabeth Forte won the Long Jump with a seasons best 15'10".  Devyn Thompson won the 880 yard run, while Lavinia Jurkiewicz won the 2 Mile run to round out the individual victors for Whitney Young.

Jurkiewicz and Thompson placed 2nd and 3rd respectively in the Mile Run.  Other scorers for the Dolphins included Camielle Hurley (5th- 300 yard run), Addie Avila (4th- 2 mile run), Precious Walker (6th- Shot Put), Bianca Gay (5th- Triple Jump), Chandler Farris (5th- 440 yd. dash), Audriana Higginbotham (4th- 600 yard run), Leilah Langston (4th 55 Meter Dash), Samantha Wong (5th 60 yd. hurdles), and Jessica Wong (6th - 880 yd. dash).

The JV team saw numerous individual victories including Tia McClellan (Mile Run), Tianna Robinson (Long Jump), Jasmine Wright (60 yd. hurdles), and Porsha Irvin (600 yd. dash).

Bloom Invitational this weekend. 

Whitney Young will be competing in its first invitational this weekend, heading south to Bloom Trail high School.  Last year the Dolphins finished 2nd behind host Bloom. 

The bus will be leaving from Whitney Young at 7:30 am.  Runners are expected to be there by 7:15 am.  The roster is below:

The Whitney Young Dolphins opened up their season against sectional rivals Oak Park and St. Ignatius, as well as Nazareth and Michelle Clark. 
 
There were several highlights from the meet, including Victoria Forte's 18 inch personal best in the Triple Jump.  Forte, the sectional champion in the Triple Jump, took one jump to go 37'5.5" and qualified for the Illinois Prep Top Times Indoor Classic. 
 
Freshman Raena Rhone also made her debut in victorious style, winning the 300 Meter Dash in 43.00.  Rhone also ran on the 2nd place 4 x 160 meter relay, and placed 3rd in the 200 meter dash (27.2). 
 
Devyn Thompson placed 2nd in the 1600 Meter Run (5:47). 
 
Other highlights from the meet for the Dolphins included Leilah Langston running the 55 meter dash in 7.3, Kristal Buzin running the 800 meter dash in 2:47, Elisabeth Forte placing 3rd in the long jump (15'4"), Bianca Gay placing 3rd in the Triple Jump (31'1.5"), Precious Walker throwing the Shot Put 26'3" (a 3 foot personal best), and Ivory Mills placing 3rd in the Pole Vault (7'0")
 
The Dolphins placed 3rd behind both Oak Park and St. Ignatius.
 
On the Frosh-Soph level, Natalie Pace was the lone event champion, winning the Pole Vault with a height of 6'6".  Tianna Robinson placed 2nd in both the 55 meter dash (7.6) and 200 Meter Dash (29.1).

Dolphins set for season opener:

                         Whitney Young opens its season this Friday at Oak Park River Forest, where they will take on sectional rivals Oak Park and St. Ignatius.  The Dolphins return 3/4 of its State Qualifying 4 x 800 relay of Rachel Joravsky, Devyn Thompson, and Lavinia Jurkiewicz.  Also returning are State Qualifiers Victoria Forte (Triple Jump & 4 x 200 relay), and Leilah Langston (4 x 100 relay).

                        Marking their debut this season will be Freshmen sensations Raena Rhone, Elisabeth Forte, and Maisie Vachuska.

                       Rhone, a seasoned club track runner, has posted times of 55.85 in the 400 meters, 22.52 in the 200 meters, and 12.29 in the 100 meters.  Rhone ran on the Whitney Young Cross Country Team that placed 14th downstate.

                      Forte, younger sister of Senior Victoria, came up through the CPS elementary track program, and has run under 1:00 in the 400 meter dash, and has Long Jumped over 16 feet.

                      Vachuska was the #3 runner for the Dolphins this past Cross Country season, placed 3rd at the City Cross Country Championships behind teammates Thompson and Jurkiewicz, and has personal best times of 5:39 in the 1600 Meter Run and 11:58 in a 2 mile cross country race. 

                     The Dolphins are looking to see improvements out of Senior Pole Vaulter Ivory Mills.  Mills, a senior, has been regularly clearing 8 feet during the off season, as she has been working with a Pole Vault Club on Sundays.
